Little Houses on the Prairy

A series of homes on the range

  • Comprised of three houses for a family, all on the same site, in the Flint Hills of Kansas, each home had a different purpose and affiliated object. Documentation was completed on square sheets of Mylar with sketches/process on one side and finished drawings on the other. The projects start with a functioning home, followed by a look into what once was and how the family may have lived in the past, the third features a ruined home that is meant to have a new purpose.

    House 1 — livable, accompanied by a light source. Comprised of an underground home with large light-shelves bringing light deep into the spaces and a small entry house to descend.

    House 2 — gallery, accompanied by a surface. Comprised of a rusted metal shell with viewing globes puncturing the surfaces and quotidian paths of the spaces that were once inhabited.

    House 3 — ruin, accompanied by a seat. Comprised of a cantilevered grid structure and movable pods for the different functions of, the ruin has been repurposed into a kids summer camp.
